I first discovered taiji ( tai chi ) in a park near Chinatown in San Francisco, about 30 years ago. Practicing under the trees, the movements of the students and teachers seemed to blend with the branches overhead.
Later I worked with an old San Franciscan who lived by the Bay and practiced tai chi in a tiny garden. He threw the I-Ching regularly. It seemed that on many days the I-Ching advised no work. When, however, the I-Ching deemed the day auspicious for work, he would go, and sell much more than everyone else. On what were his few working days, he was far more productive and efficient than those who worked every day.
This was a philosophy and system for living that certainly appealed to me.
On returning to South Africa in 1976 I was introduced to Sifu Edward Jardine who's teacher was (the Late) Master Duan Yu Chang's and who practiced Chen Man Ching yang style taiji.
I trained tai-chi with Sifu Jardine until my decision to leave South Africa to Japan IN 1987, via Taiwan to pursue my karate there both as an escape from South Africa and a new life beginning.
After two years of living and training karate in Japan (secretly taiji at the Buddhist temples where I could be alone) I arrived in Australia to pursue my dream of freedom.
I began teaching karate to children at Bellevue Hill Public School as well as short tai chi courses and ongoing taiji adult classes in Sydney.
I met Patrick Kelly at Bronte Park after my training one day and was invited to join his classes. Since then I have practiced and instructed (the late) Master Huang Sheng-Shyan's taiji as taught to me on a continuing basis by Patrick Kelly.
I was able to travel to Auckland, New Zealand to train at Patrick's taiji studio. A beautiful house with a tai chi, yoga studio and accomodation for him and his family plus a smaller unit which he rented out.
Now I concentrate my efforts on assimilating the vast amount of information shared with me over these thirty odd years of training and allow most of my tai chi training to occur in the parklands of Sydney which are very special to me.
